Sierra Vista lost five games by a touchdown or less last year, but still qualified for the postseason as the Southwest Division’s No. 4 seed. Reaching the playoffs this fall will be a challenge.

Sierra Vista lost five juniors who started last year as sophomores to first-year school Desert Oasis, which opened on Blue Diamond Road in August and took most of its students from an overcrowded Sierra Vista.

“It’s not always nice to see someone else gain from your fruits of labor,” Sierra Vista coach Mark Sauve said.

Sierra Vista’s top player might also be one of the valley’s best. Running back Akil Sharpe, who rushed for 1,255 yards and eight touchdowns last year, earned the third highest score nationally last spring at a recruiting combine that tested speed and strength.

Basic quarterback Faiman named Home News Player of the Year

Robby Faiman's beginnings as Basic's quarterback could not have been more humbling. As a skinny, 5-foot-4 ninth-grader, barely tall enough to see over the offensive line, Faiman helmed Basic's 2004 freshman team to a 0-10 season.
