Desert Oasis is the only school competing in the large-school classification with no chance of winning the state title. The Diamondbacks, you see, are a first-year school and not eligible for the postseason.

Located on Blue Diamond Road in Southwest Las Vegas and serving the Mountain's Edge and Southern Highlands communities, the school is expected to struggle early without a senior class. It will play an independent schedule against lower-classification teams before joining the Southwest Division next year.

"The first year is about establishing what the program will be all about and developing an attitude," said coach Matt Jenkins, who also opened Canyon Springs in 2004 and coached at the North Las Vegas school for four seasons.

Desert Oasis will be led by three juniors who started for Sierra Vista last year as sophomores. The group includes linebackers Zach Knudson and Roycen Shepard and receiver Elijah Mitchell.
