Plenty of athletes are coached by their fathers as youngsters, but John Therrell will get the chance to play for his dad as a Division I football player. The Bishop Gorman senior committed to play safety for UNLV following an official visit to the school Dec. 12-14. Therrell's father, Dennis Therrell, is the Rebels defensive coordinator.

UNLV athletics director Mike Hamrick sat at the ESPN Zone Tuesday afternoon as the 2008 Las Vegas Bowl participants -- Arizona and BYU -- met the media. Seated at a table just right of center stage following the press conference portion of the event, he was able to use both the Wildcats and Cougars as examples in discussing his decision to give Rebels coach Mike Sanford a three-year extension.

Did you catch Mike Sanford on the Channel 8 news Monday night, talking about a contract extension in a tone that bordered on defiance? Sanford supposedly will meet with Athletic Director Mike Hamrick after Thanksgiving to discuss a contract extension. An extension is the wrong topic for Sanford and Hamrick’s conversation.

SAN DIEGO -- While the night as a whole was tough for some of the UNLV football players to put into words, what San Diego State quarterback Ryan Lindley did to the Rebels' defense wasn't as tough to put into words.

SAN DIEGO -- What's on paper can't win ball games on its own. San Diego State found 42 ways to prove that Saturday night at Qualcomm Stadium. The Aztecs looked nothing like the team that had stumbled to a 1-10 record going into the season's final weekend, one that dragged a porous defense with it like a ball and chain.

It's official. The UNLV football team's regular season finale at San Diego State will mean something, indeed. On the heels of Thursday night's 22-14 Senior Night victory over Wyoming, the Rebels remain in control of their own bowl eligibility fate. The UNLV defense held things down with a pair of second half interceptions off of Chris Stutzriem.
