Joe Darger found his 3-point touch, Rene Rougeau scrapped around and Wink Adams muscled his way into the lane Thursday night as UNLV’s go-to player. The starting seniors provided the foundation for the Rebels’ 87-71 victory over Northern Arizona before 11,760 at the Thomas & Mack Center. But the UNLV bench provided more than window dressing for a second consecutive game.

Folks around Neptune, N.J., hadn’t seen anything like DeShawn Mitchell in … well, forever. Mitchell, 19, took off from New Jersey and landed in Las Vegas, but he still doesn’t spend much time on the ground.

With 5:02 left and his team pretty much out of contention against UNLV Tuesday night, Texas-Pan American coach Tom Schuberth turned around, leaned over the scorer's table and said a quick goodbye to Jerry Tarkanian.
Team manager Jason McElwain, who has come to be known as J-Mac, is hoisted by his teammates after he scored 20 points in the final minutes of the final home game of the 2006 season. J-Mac will make an appearance this week in Las Vegas.

This time, UNLV was pretty for long enough to pull away in the second half, doing so in a 73-48 victory over Texas-Pan American Tuesday night at the Thomas & Mack Center. The Rebels were led by 14 points from DeShawn Mitchell and 12 from Rene Rougeau.

The Texas-Pan American hoops squad hit just 10 of its 19 free throw attempts in its 2008-09 season opener. That's a percentage that begs for improvement, even if it didn't hurt the Broncs in the least bit in an 84-59 victory over Sul Ross State Saturday night. Covering up the miserable performance at the stripe was a blistering 61-percent showing from the field. To be specific, that's 36 makes on 59 tries.
