Allen returns to witness stand in Stevens trial
Tue, Oct 7, 2008 (3:57 a.m.)
Oil pipeline executive Bill Allen returns to the witness stand Tuesday to continue his testimony in the corruption trial of his old friend, Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens.
Prosecutors on Monday revealed the contents of taped phone calls in which the two men discussed a federal investigation of Allen's makeover of the senator's mountain cabin. Unbeknownst to Stevens, Allen had already agreed to work with investigators and secretly tape the conversations.
Late Monday, prosecutors filed a formal response to repeated defense claims that prosecutors intentionally withheld evidence favorable to Stevens. The prosecutors said they had done nothing wrong and called the defense claims "the latest salvo in their effort to derail the trial."
