The truths about Nevada politics

Fri, Nov 14, 2008 (2 a.m.)

One of the enduring truths about Nevada politics — and the best reason to keep covering that world after two decades — is that you can still be surprised. New state Senate Majority Leader Steven Horsford undoubtedly shocked the political cognoscenti Thursday with his announcement of committee chairmanships, including naming himself to head the powerful Senate Finance Committee. But not by himself. He named veteran Sen. Bernice Mathews as co-chairwoman, an unprecedented arrangement that surely caused ripples among Senate Democrats. Bob Coffin, the senior member of Finance, was passed over as Mathews, the only black senator besides Horsford, leapfrogged over him, as did the new majority leader. One word: Wow.

  1. I applaud the recent changes brought on by Nevada voters. Unfortunately, we have a long way to go to overcome the brain cramp we put at the head of the class up in Carson City. We just need to fiscally survive to show the former-congressmen how the people really think of him in 2010!

  2. hmmm

  3. It is going to be fun to watch former Chairman Townsend this session. Nothing to sell; like his position. Nothing to say; like "your first loss is your best loss". Just a stuffed shirt with out any power> LOL
