Letter to the editor:

Oilman crusader speaks the truth

Wed, Jul 23, 2008 (2:04 a.m.)

Have you seen T. Boone Pickens’ recent TV interview and commercials? He says he’s been an oilman all his life and we can’t drill our way out of this mess.

He supports clean, safe alternative energies such as wind and solar. Finally, someone from the oil industry speaks out!

I hope he gets through to people, including politicians!

Discussion: 37 comments so far…

  1. Yes he is pushing for Wind...not Solar.

He is pushing Natural Gas cars as a replacement for oil base cars.

He wants to use wind to replace the current consumption of natural gas for electricty generation and move that consumption into cars.

Wind, like Solar, is not a reliable 24/7 energy source and there is no cost effective storage system to over come that problem.

Wind and solar can supplement our energy platform but it can not totally replace natural gas, nuclear or coal systems.

  2. While jfnance32 generally writes nonsense, part of what he says is true. Scientific American recently published a piece on how solar could replace all our fossil fuel use for electricity. Who to believe? A entity without a face or Scientific American?

  3. You are so smart you even do not read your own sources.

I think you are being suckered in. The authors of the article are not unbiased scientist. They are owners in solar systems manufacturing corporations. It is an opinion piece and not a scientific article. It has definitely not gone through peer review of any sort.

The article admits that current technology cannot support what they are promising. They keep stating throughout the article that technology progress is needed and is assumed to occur in their plan. They said, "Progress is clearly needed...." or “The main progress required” or “Neither is fully developed” or “giving them time to mature”. It is like crossing your fingers type of approach which is right up your alley.

They also admit the biggest flaw in solar energy which is…."The great limiting factor of solar power, of course, is that it generates little electricity when skies are cloudy and none at night. Excess power must therefore be produced during sunny hours and stored for use during dark hours. Most energy storage systems such as batteries are expensive or inefficient."

Their solution, which they admit is theoretical in capacity and cost, is using compressed air to store excess energy. They admit that this storage capacity it at minimum will double the cost of solar power. In their plan they admit building the required half a trillion cubic feet of underground storage area will be challenging. They do not offer any estimated on the capital cost of building such infrastructure. They even say that they assume that natural gas systems will share the cost. What??? I thought you said that they are doing away with all fossil fuel???????

Their plan will take 50 years to implement with hundreds of billions of taxpayer money. They say at least $500 billion and that is just for the solar systems. They do not factor in the cost of the storage systems nor the new “new high-voltage, direct-current (HVDC) power transmission backbone would have to be built.” I think one will need to double that estimate. They say, “Without subsidies, the solar grand plan is impossible.”

Obama, Reid, Gore and you are trying to lead this country down a road where it could be just a bag of worthless magic beans that cost trillions of dollars to purchase. I am willing to invest some money in solar and wind but at the same keep developing coal, nuclear, oil and natural gas until those systems are proven to work. Even according to their plan it will take 40 to 50 years, during that time we need to be wise and drill now. I am sure that you are too myopic in your view to even consider the wisdom of drilling now......go ahead now and scream "HELL NO WE WILL NEVER EVER EVER DRILL EVEN IF LAS VEGAS BECOMES A GHOST TOWN".

  4. You are one that is dragging discussions from other postings into this discussion.

So go read the other postings and you will see the questions.

  5. You have not answer the number of years it will take to implement Obama's plan.

  6. That is correct. I am not going to do your research for you. You're a big boy, figure it out.

Sheesh, those lazy Neocons! Expecting me to write their criticisms? That's just boneheaded.

  7. You must be ashamed of your Obama's plan because his plan does not move us off oil in 5 years or 10 years or 20 years or 30 years or 40 years or 50 years or 60 years or 70 years.

It never does. His plan has the USA using significant amounts of oil for a very long time.

You should vote for Ralph Nader.

  8. No, your plan now!

    LOL

  9. I guess you are OK with Obama's plan that it does not remove us from relying on fossil fuels.

It does reduce oil reliance but does not remove it.

It shows that Obama does have some common sense.

Other parts of his are crazy and if implemented will kill jobs in the USA but at least his plan is not a crazy...."solar and wind will replace everything plan".

  10. One more thing: this report that proves we've made "satisfactory progress" on 15 of 18 benchmarks? Please link it, I'd like to read it for myself.

  11. Obama wants move troops out of Iraq because the surge worked.

So I guess you are arguing with the pretty boy Obama now.
